On his inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reimagine” America's largest city, promising “a new era” and an bold start to his administration.

A Groundbreaking Figure

The new figure, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

• A rent freeze for about 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these programs may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Challenges

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's public safety record, citing historically low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
