As any major awards ceremony draws close, there’s always an outcry to include additional classifications to recognize unsung work and delight the hearts of fans who have specialized interests.
Another commentator has already made for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing and significant. This is the request: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. But it is an essential concession within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category during that awards season
- A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
- Only a few logic titles barely qualified for niche award types
Value of Brain-Teasers
Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most popular titles globally and have been for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
Restating the point, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
