Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.
The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.
"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of access tunnels leading to the depot... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," the ministry announced.
There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.
The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.
"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.
British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.
"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this strike for their skill and their courage," he said. "They were among numerous UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, shows how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."
During December, the US military carried out what it termed a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, following an attack killed two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The UN says Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
